Imre Varga: István Széchenyi

The sculpture of Imre Varga depicting István Széchenyi was placed at the Main Square in 2012. István Széchenyi played a crucial role in the establishment of an operating steamship system on Lake Balaton. In 1846 the Steamship Company of Lake Balaton was founded and Széchenyi had became the honorary president of it. In the same year, the first paddle steamer of Lake Balaton, called Kisfaludy was set afloat in Balatonfüred.
The bronze and chrome steel art piece made by Imre Varga depicts Széchenyi standing on Kisfaludy steam ship, while the fountain around the sculpture symbolizes the water of Lake Balaton. The standing figure of Széchenyi looks in the direction of the harbour that shows his committment towards shipping on the lake.
